Christopher McHugh

Christopher studied Fine Art at Bath Academy of Art and Manchester Polytechnic and later took an MA at the University of Sussex. He has developed his practice as a painter throughout a career shared with other artistic endeavours (in particular, in artist collectives, galleries and university teaching). His work focuses on a range of painting concerns including the synesthetic potential of the visual and the beguiling, transformative behaviour of colour.

Chris writes: “In these little representatives of the ongoing Arcadia series, the idea of the image of ‘tree’ takes centre stage as a visual meme in a trickster game of reference, tactility, memory and imagination. Titles follow paintings, with misleading maps of intertextual connection but the paintings are essentially ‘things to explore by looking’.”
