Sarah Ruthven

Sarah’s artistic career has taken her from a BA Fine Art at Kingston University to a Masters of Fine Art at Winchester School of Art with Distinction. Sarah now lives and works in East Sussex with her daughters. She is an oil painter working predominantly en plein air, abstracting the landscape with colour.

She is drawn to wild places like the west coast of Cornwall, the Sussex coastline and the undulating and expansive South Downs. ‘The play of shifting light, textures and atmospheres creates a landscape which is deep, living and breathing.’

There is a freedom for Sarah when painting out in the landscape in all different weathers throughout the year. She builds up a connection with certain painting spots that are revisited again and again, tapping into the energy of the land. ‘Painting fundamentally challenges my whole being, connecting me directly to something much larger and more important than myself’. Sarah hopes to emphasise the fragility of our oceans, countryside and a desire to protect, honour and celebrate the natural world.
