Richard Miles
Richard Miles studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art, graduating in 1983. While there he was tutored by a wide range of artists including Clyde Hopkins, Terry Frost and Dennis Creffield. Since then he has followed parallel creative paths in visual art and sound, referencing landscape and light in both disciplines.
Drawing is central to his visual work. The South Downs and their surroundings – and the air covering them – are a recurring starting point for Miles, who is based in Lewes. His practice ranges from smaller observational pieces drawn in situ to further exploration in the studio, including larger colour-saturated abstract images. Latest works have been predominantly produced using ink on paper and board.
“Ink is completely unforgiving as a medium and this is a significant attraction for me, each drawing feels like an adventure. Ink has no undo button. Speed and control are essential, while aiming for balance and calm in the final image.”
